 Mathematics Unit Research

Research Assessment Exercise: Computing

The Department of Computing received a 3a rating, in the 1996 assessment of UK Universities' research, equating to:

Research quality that equates to attainable levels of national excellence in a substantial majority of the sub-areas of activity, or to international level in some and to national level in others comprising a majority.

Opportunities

The Department of Computing provides full-time and part-time postgraduate courses and has extensive facilities for students wishing to do research. There are on average twenty five research students and fifty course students registered with the department each year.

Most members of staff conduct research into some aspect of computing and all are experienced teachers. Between then the members of staff have considerable experience of the scientific and commercial application of computers and the Department maintains close links with industry.

Applicants wishing to do research can choose any topic they wish and the Department will try to find a suitable supervisor. However, members of staff have their own interests and at present the Department is seeking students who wish to do research into one of the areas that coincide with the interests of the groups given above.
