Research & Study at the Library
Students are strongly encouraged to take advantage of the library facilities in order to research and prepare their coursework. Regular use of the library facilities would enable students to enhance their skills in fact gathering, information retrieval techniques and data analysis. Laboratory work
Students are provided with computing laboratory facilities in order to develop their individual and group assessed work.
Interactive Class Exercises
Interactive class exercises provide an informal opportunity to students to exchange ideas, critical points of view and knowledge. This is a supervised activity and your lecturer(s) will contribute and direct these exercises.
Private study and Seminars
Students have to take control of their own learning through private study. A range of seminars are organised throughout the year and students are encouraged to attend these. Some seminars contribute additional material to the course while others provide continual professional development material in the spirit of Bradford's 'Excellence Plus' enhancement of a student's learning experience.
Student Support and Guidance
You will be joining the dynamic and friendly team of the Department of Computing, where you will benefit from working with research active academic staff and students studying other advanced Computing programmes.
All students admitted to the School of Informatics go through a process of induction that includes detailed talks led by a senior member of staff. Afterwards, ongoing support for students is provided in the form of one-stop facilities located at the School of Informatics Student Support Office (SSO) in Horton A2.09, open throughout the day during term, and in the mornings and afternoons outside term. Support for registered students also is provided 24/7 via the intranets of the School of Informatics, Department of Computing and the School’s Technical Support (i.e. the Student Handbook, Frequently Asked Questions, details and contact information on Courses and Course Tutors). The School also uses the University’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) to support students via their individual modules.
All students are allocated a Personal Tutor who provides support and guidance on matters relating to learning, teaching, and academic progress. Students will have periodic sessions with the Course Tutor as well as the PG Computing Course Chair. The Computing Staff Student Liaison Committee gives the opportunity for students to give formal feedback to the Course Tutor and/or department about curricular issues and the general running of the programme. A new Informatics Postgraduate Teaching Centre is now available. It contains a Teaching Room, a Tutorial Room, and a PC Room. The access via electronic card is 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.
