Evangelos Karystinakis - MSc Computing
Evangelos Karystinakis.

What are your overall thoughts about your course and the University?

The MSc Computing course is actually a conversion course, I thought it was really good. the course gave me an opportunity to study a subject that I haven’t studied before. I really recommend this type of course to anyone who has a degree in a subject other than computing and would like to broaden their knowledge in the computing field.

As far as the University is concerned, the campus is very nice, in fact I think Bradford is very nice! There are lots of bars and restaurants. Bradford is also very cosmopolitan, there are people here from many different nationalities, which is great because you can meet people from all over the world and learn new things from them - and about them.

What's been your favourite module?

My favourite module was in the first semester and it's called Software Development, its based around Java as a programming language. It was very interesting and also very useful, because it helped me in the second semester with a project in another module. In that module we had to produce a web design which was built around Java.

Was there a particular project that you really enjoyed doing?

In the second semester we did a project, for the Web Technologies module, in which we had to design a web site for a company that sells computer components. It was very interesting because we could use which ever programming language we preferred. The site had to be database driven and we also got to choose which ever database we preferred. I found I learnt a lot from the project, it was definitely a very useful experience.

What do you do in your spare time?

I like to hang around with my friends, we like to go to the local bars, there’s lots of bars in Bradford! I also like to go to Cineworld, the large cinema complex in the centre of town, which is part of the Leisure Exchange. It’s very convenient because it has lots of films showing at different times.

Surprisingly, there’s quite a few parks in Bradford which I really like, I like to walk around the parks.

What your opinion of the staff and facilities at Bradford?

Before I came here I was studying in Greece, here the attitude of the staff is completely different! In Greece you can’t just go up to a lecturer and talk to them. Here, in Bradford, they are very friendly and much more approachable, staff will give you their e-mail and you can contact them whenever you want.

In terms of facilities, I think the hardware and software is very good, it’s all up-to-date and there are plenty of computers. If you have any technical problems you can get instant help from the Technical Support Office and if you have problems with coursework submissions, timetabling, or things like that, you can always go to the Student Support Office, where they usually solve your problems very quickly.
