Charles Sikasula - MSc Mobile Computing
Charles Sikasula.

Why did you choose Bradford?

I chose Bradford because it was the only University that was offering this type of course – MSc in Mobile Computing – in a format that I was looking for. I have a qualification in computing, but I wanted to extend my knowledge in telecommunications, the communications industries and mobile technologies.

What are your overall thoughts about your course?

I think the MSc in Mobile Computing produces professionals with knowledge in Telecommunications and Computing. I found the topics we studied relate directly to the sort of things that are happening in industry, especially in 3G and 4G networks. The course was exactly what I was looking for to expand my knowledge in these areas.

What's been your favourite module?

It's difficult to pick a favourite module, what I would say is that the various projects we had to do during the course – we had to do projects for a number of the modules – were really useful as they helped me to combine the different technologies taught in the Mobile Computing course. I found that the projects helped me to understand the principles involved in the course and, in some cases, to contribute ideas in a group environment.

What did you do for your final MSc project?

My final project was on the subject of Congestion Control on the Internet. As the Internet grows, there are more and more users, there's more on-line communities, even more Internet crime. All of these things contribute to congestion on the Internet. The technologies that were developed for the Internet in the 80’s cannot cope now, so my project involved looking at new technologies which will help to reduce Internet congestion.

What do you do in your spare time?

I really like going to the National Media Museum, they have an Imax Cinema where they show 3D movies. I also like going to the Leisure Exchange where there’s the Cineworld Multiplex Cinema, Hollywood Bowl and some really good restaurants. I also like to go to church on Sundays.

What your opinion of the staff and facilities at Bradford?

We had access to very well equipped, sophisticated, studios and laboratories, which is important because, on the Mobile Computing MSc course, we developed software and systems using the latest technologies.  The staff are very friendly and helpful, you are dealing with people who have accomplished a great deal and become authorities in their subjects. I found the staff to be a great inspiration.

Charles installs computer networks and produces feasibility studies for the UN. He is in charge of central Africa and part of Asia and is based in Zambia. Charles has also worked in Saudi-Arabia and Thailand and is widely traveled.
